80/20 Rule or Beating Perfectionist’s Block

My Etsy store - SkyGrazer
I get hung up on the details, and getting things “right”. Even though right is
relative and perfect is unattainable.

So when I don’t know everything, or have everything I need to do something right, I
end up watching tv or reading a book instead 🙂 Not very effective.

I’m going to try to follow the 80/20 rule from now on. Which according to Wikipedia
is called the Pareto Principle (and doesn’t mean quite what I thought it meant – 80%
of your results comes from 20% of the effort). Still sounds like a phrase I should
start dropping into conversation: “No, of course I don’t do that. I follow the
Pareto Principle.”

Anyway, the way I’m planning to use the concept, 80% is good enough to start with. A
bit of imperfect progress is much better than doing nothing. And I can always
improve on things later.

So, instead of dithering about which macro lens I should get for our Nikon D90 to
take really good jewelry photos (if you know, tell me), I used my iPod Touch and
took some reasonably decent photos.

And then I imported them into the Etsy app, cropped ’em, and stuck them up on the site. Now I have to figure out how to streamline product descriptions, etc so it doesn’t
take me all night to do five items. 🙂

So, this is also the unofficial announcement that I’ve opened an Etsy store. More
stuff to be uploaded soon. Once the perfect clasps that I’ve ordered arrive… 😉

The 80% result sounds crazy but it is true. I have had the same roadblock with my projects. Thanks for the heads up! Love your work. {I am proud of you.} Love, “Mom”

I’m glad I’m not the only one 🙂 And thanks!
