In my years of writing and speaking about art marketing, I meet hundreds of people who hold themselves back, believing everything deserves their “best”.
They wait to exhibit to find “the perfect show”. They refuse to work with anything but “the best gallery”. They wait until they can afford find a “perfect” web designer so they could have “a really great website.” (One seamstress had no garment labels in her clothing line – not one indication the garments were even handmade, let alone who made them. She was waiting until she had a website url to use on her labels.)
They save to buy “a really great camera” so they can take “super pictures” of their work. Many, many, many people – especially women – wait for their kids to grow up and move out, so they can finally have “the studio of their dreams”. (Their kids are in first grade.)
Yes, all very true. And think of what we are capable of if we separate ourselves from the mindset she describes.
