Leap for Joy – Refinished

Leap for Joy – Refinished

This is one of the pieces I have available at the Wickford Art Association during the Small Works show.

I actually sculpted it a couple years ago but didn’t like the original finish. I had used mica powders on black clay – trying for a moon lit look.

Usually I love the effect of mica powders but in this case, it just scattered the light off the surface too much and the details of the sculpture were lost. But I still loved the form of the dolphin so I wanted to rework it.

This time around, I tried out the Swellegant* metal paints (brass) and darkening patina. I think it works much better this time around, and I’m looking forward to trying the patinas on future work.

This is what it looked like originally.

Sculpt a Baby Seal Class

There are still a few spots left in my sculpting class on October 28th.

Sign up at the Wickford Art Association (Wickford,RI) and go to Classes – Current Classes in the menu.

It’s a fairly simple project in some ways so it’s perfect for beginners, but I’ve taught it to my clay guild as well and they loved the little guys.

HopArts Studio Trail This Weekend

If you’re local to Southern Rhode Island (which includes most of the state and a good part of Connecticut), then stop by Saturday or Sunday to see me at for HopArts.

Saturday & Sunday – October 14 & 15, 2017
10 am – 5 pm [rain or shine ]

I’ll be at Forbes’ Flowers,
866 Main St, Hope Valley, RI

I’m one of over 30 artists at various studio locations on the HopArts trail. I’ll have some art (including my award winning Space Kraken ) and my jewelry, and I’ll be working on a small sculpture piece if you’d like to see how it’s done.

All studios are located within a 7 mile radius in the towns of Richmond and Hopkinton, and easily accessed off exits 2 and 3 on I-95.

It’s a great collection of artists and skilled crafts people with really gorgeous work. You can get all your holiday shopping done ahead of time, or find something unique for yourself.

And one of the cool things this year, is that they used a picture of one of my necklaces on all the promotional materials. 🙂

Wrap Bracelets with Resin

I ordered some new colors of reclaimed sari silk ribbon recently. And I finished up some more polymer buttons, this time coating them with resin. They look better in person as they catch the light.

Here’s a couple of the new wrap bracelets I made with them. And I’ve been doing some other resin experiments that you’ll see on the blog soon.

Little Critters

Couple little critters that I made recently out of a mix of Sea Green and White Premo.

The octopus and fish have pan pastels applied for shading.

And the octopus is sitting in a real shell.

Wrap Bracelets

I made these clay buttons awhile ago using vintage metal button bezels.

The wrap bracelet is made from reclaimed Sari silk ribbons. Gorgeous colors and very comfortable to wear.

I’m on the computer constantly during the day and the nice thing about a fabric bracelet is that it doesn’t clank against the keyboard.

This one was my favorite – an experiment using resin – and it sold right off my wrist to a friend from work.

I’ve got more in the works 🙂

New Bracelets

Here's a few bracelets I made recently.

They all started as a veneer of pan pastel on textured clay and they're inlaid into vintage brass hinged bracelet blanks.

The bracelet blanks are great and I'll be sorry when I run out, but they are a little tricky around the hinge. I have to carefully undercut the veneer for the tab to fit in.

I really love the matte look of the pastels. Fits really well with the clay.

Tassel Earrings

I got a chance to make a few earrings at RiverFire last week.

I used some textured polymer pebble beads I'd made awhile ago and added tassels made from reclaimed sari silk.

I think they're fun. I might still change out the earwire though. Something darker or handmade would probably look better.

July Challenge – Making Things

Having the studio organized again has been great. It needs to be tidied up again already – a never ending process – but I can actually find things! It’s so amazingly nice 🙂

So, in honor of that, I’m going to do another challenge in July, but without any particular rules.

I just have to make things. And that can be clay, or jewelry, finishing old work or whatever. I just want to have some fun and get back into a good studio practice.

I’ve already made 30 dragon’s eyes, some bracelets, a tiny fish, a little octopus in a shell, and assembled some earrings. Some of those need to be baked, sealed or finished though so I’ll post them when they’re done.
