Rose and Spider – Relief Sculpture on Ceramic Tile Painted in Oils

rosestile_cropped This was another of my experiments with oils after taking Doreen Kassel’s workshop.

Normally when I sculpt on a tile, I make the clay thicker and remove it from the tile after it’s cured. In this case, I tried her method and curled the clay around the edges, making the tile part of the finished piece. I rather like it that way, at least for small work (4×4 inches). It gives it a nice heft and bulks up the thickness without wasting clay.

The first time I painted it, I made the rose yellow. I left it that way for a few weeks, but it didn’t look quite right, so I went over it again with a reddish pink. I used some of the same color (in very light doses) to highlight the leaves and vines here and there, and warm up areas of the background. I think it’s much more interesting and inviting this time around.
