Think Outside Your Medium

lisa mayLast week I went to see Lisa May do a Papermaking Demo at the http://www.wickfordart.org/.

Check out her great sculptural work at the Deblois Gallery. She’ll also be teaching a class soon at Wickford.

It was a great presentation and we even got to make a sheet of paper ourselves. I had no idea how sturdy or versatile paper could be.

But most of all it got me thinking… If she’s making armatures and incredible hollow sculptures with sheets of paper pulp, what could I be doing with sheets of polymer? All sorts of structural and inspirational ideas were swirling around in my head on the ride home.

Sometimes my most interesting ideas come from something totally unrelated to polymer. It reminded me yet again to keep my eyes and mind open.

And stay tuned… I’ll be doing the demo/presentation next month about Polymer Clay on June 9th from 7-8pm. ๐Ÿ™‚

Papermaking is on my bucket list, it just looks so intriguing! I agree, introduction to another medium that I’m unfamiliar with often sparks a ‘what if’ thought with my own medium. And to be honest, I thought you were going to say you were thinking about ising the paper hollow sculptures as a base for your polymer sculptures!

People who have never worked with polymer will be blown away at your presentation. Have fun!

Actually it was one of the things I was thinking so you’re right. ๐Ÿ™‚ Probably not paper pulp but draped or folded paper or those cardboard shapes from the craft store… If we leave air holes there’s no reason an armature has to be solid.

The sparky what ifs are the best, aren’t they?
