In this case, I tried her method and curled the clay around the edges, making the tile part of the finished piece. I rather like it that way, at least for small work (4&#215;4 inches). It gives it a nice heft and bulks up the thickness without wasting clay.<\/p>\n<p>The first time I painted it, I made the rose yellow. I left it that way for a few weeks, but it didn&#8217;t look quite right, so I went over it again with a reddish pink. I used some of the same color (in very light doses) to highlight the leaves and vines here and there, and warm up areas of the background.
