Exploring the Art of Polymer Clay blog

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

Exploring the Art of Polymer Clay is another great polymer clay blog. Lots of great images for inspiration, posts about Janice’s own art and process, and posts featuring other art and artists. A great place to widen your art outlook.

Renewal

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

renewal This was another rather abstract sculpture. I created the leaf shapes after some experimentation but the driftwood was pure serendipity. I was originally going to create a clay base, or use some beach slate, but it didn’t look right. So I went searching through my stash of “stuff” and found this great driftwood branch as a base.

The “jade” is two colors of Pinata inks (both greens) in translucent clay, mixed in with a bit of embossing powder.

Crafty Goat’s Notes

In reply to my question about image use a few days ago, Angela posted some great information on her blog, Crafty Goat’s Notes, about fair use and the Creative Commons license.

She also has some great lessons and info, and highlights on clay events. Well worth dropping by to check it out.

Cleaning – Or “What I did on my Vacation”

Monday, November 26th, 2007

I was catching up on my blog reading and saw that Libby was doing almost the same thing I was – cleaning out the studio. Of course, her beginning photos are what my goal is :)

Libby’s got some really good points – clutter seems to be almost inevitable for creative people but at some point it starts to inhibit you. You realize that it’s way too much effort to try to make anything because you’d have to clear a path to your worktable, shove aside the stuff, and then you won’t be able to find anything you need anyway…

So this weekend I spent most of a day and cleaned up half of my studio. My kaleidoscope table is now clear, the drawers are organized and even labelled and we bought some more lights for that end of the room. And the amazing thing? I haven’t had the time, energy or inspiration to make a scope in almost a year. But all of a sudden my head is buzzing with ideas and I can’t wait to try some of them.

Now I just have to tackle the other half!

Abstract – InSight

insight This was one of the pieces I created as show entries recently. I had alot of fun with the idea and have a few other variations in mind that I may try at some point. I used some of the forming techniques I learned in Dan Cormier’s workshop for the outer rows of leaves. The innner leaves were baked on a decorative lightbulb.

insight side The center eye is acrylic and was glued in place after baking. I think I may turn this into a wall piece since it looks best when you look into it and I don’t have any low tables that I want to display it on.

Ali di Libellula

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

Ali di Libellula is an Italian blog and I can’t read a word of it. But it doesn’t matter. Her clay and wire work is absolutely exquisite and the images speak for themselves. I’ve always loved Art Nouveau and this is the first time I’ve seen it done in polymer clay the way it should be.

I think I need to learn how to solder – I’d love to feature my animals in filigree the way she does her florals.

I believe this was originally featured on Polymer Clay Daily.

Luann Udell

Luann’s blog is one of the first I ever read and got me started on this whole blog reading thing… I’m not sure if that’s good or bad, actually ;) Make sure to look at her website and wonderful wall hangings too.

You’ll find poignant and sometimes funny insights on life, art, and the business of art. Take a look at some of her series on booth design and selling at shows.
