First Fused Glass in the New Kiln

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

prefuseWell I got my kiln and had to try it out. :) I didn’t have any pmc projects ready so I took a stab at fusing glass…

So things I learned somewhat the hard way…

  • It helps if you know what your glass IS. Most of mine are pieces I bought solely for the color to add to my kaleidoscope chambers so the COE is unknown. (You can’t mix COE’s or your glass will crack since the types will expand and contract at different rates)
  • Cuttlebone casting looks really cool and is something I want to play with more, but I probably shouldn’t have cut the cuttlebone in two pieces because it cracked while fusing… That may be normal – who knows at this point?
  • My temperature (1450 degrees F) wasn’t quite high enough for the glass I was using to bing it to full fuse
  • Leave more room between pieces
  • I could have some serious problems with getting addicted to glass!

So anyway, I got the kiln and we unpacked it and put it in the cellar near a door so we can vent it to the outside when needed. I ran through the first cycle empty just to burn off any residual oils etc from manufacturing. I did some reading online to find a sample fusing schedule for the kiln (temp was too low for this type of glass though). Then I set up my glass (irridized Spectrum stained glass) mostly on a kiln shelf on top of kiln paper. You use a different type of shelf for glass than you use for PMC which was interesting.

cuttlebonecasting I also bought some cuttlebones from the pet aisle (parakeets use them) and carved some random shallow designs in one piece and a much deeper depression in the other. I used black glass with the irridized face down on the the shallow design and some assorted glass chips on the deeper depression. The black glass came out really cool (sorry the pic isn’t too good). It kept a bit of the irridescence but has the rough texture of the cuttlebone and the higher texture of my carved lines. The deeper carving didn’t work too well – too many air bubbles I think.

fusedglass I also should have left more room (I knew I had too much stuff on the shelf) since a couple pieces fused together. I tried some colors of Pearlex mica powder on some clear glass (which must have a MUCH higher fusing point since it barely did anything) and the gold stayed but the blue and green seemed to mostly burn away. Something further to experiment with although I don’t like how most of the pieces, except the black textured one, came out.

I think I’m going to have some fun with this though :)

Bracelet, Kiln Ordered

Monday, March 17th, 2008

Libby posted some pictures of the bracelets from her workshop – you can see mine with the black and white flowers in the upper left.

And in other news, I’ve ordered a kiln! I’m going for a Paragon SC3 with the bead door and view window options. (Nothing like overkill and covering for anything I might ever want to do!) My husband, awesome man that he is, got some extra money from an insurance claim and offered to get it for me. I think the main use will be PMC but I’ve also ordered some glass fusing and enameling books from the library, and I’ll use it for annealing beads if I get into lampworking. I think I’m going to have fun with it.

I have alot of great mental images of things I can make, the hard part will be getting my skill levels up to match :)

Sick and drawing

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

Well, as usual, I’m not dead but there have been times I wished I was for the last few days… I’ve had the worst cold I’ve had in a really long time. Lately, I’ve been sleeping and reading and watching tv and that’s just about it. I haven’t touched my clay, and even took a couple days out of work.

But I did pick up a kid’s book on drawing anime and manga out of the library last week and I was having some fun with that. I started out by just tracing some of the drawings and exercises because it’s amazing how bad I am at drawing smooth lines. That got me started and I started getting a feel for how the drawings were done and did a couple of my own. I’m definitely not great at it but it was fun. A nice creative but not intense activity that I could do while my head was throbbing and my lungs were trying to cough themselves out my ears.

And I think I’m starting to feel better finally… :)

Ooops…

If anyone happened to notice that my site was down for a couple days, that’s because my domain registration expired. I don’t think they notified me at all because I didn’t get anything about it, either snail or email but it’s possible I missed it. Anyway, everythings all set now that they got my money. I’m just fortunate that no one wanted my domain name.

Website redesign

current_site
new_site

The last few weeks I’ve been playing around with various ideas for the new look of my website. The first image is a screenshot of my current design. The second image is what I’m imagining the new home page will look like… The subpages will have a much smaller icon of the giraffe at the top.

I think I’m going to remove alot of the old work and really focus on the better stuff I’ve been doing lately. I hadn’t done it earlier because:

  • I thought some of the early work might be good reference to anyone starting out
  • I haven’t updated much of ANYTHING on the site in the last couple years and hadn’t gotten around to it :)

So I may review some of the older stuff and if it’s something I think is worth archiving, I may just make a blog post about it. That way it will be saved for posterity (digital posterity anyway), I won’t feel guilty about throwing things away, but it won’t be cluttering up the new and improved version.

I really don’t know where the guilt of throwing away perfectly good stuff – whether it’s physical or web content – comes from but I have an overdose of it… I think most creative people do though. I’m sure that someday I will find a use for all the cool rocks I’ve saved.

Comments on the design are really welcome if anyone has any ideas or suggestions. You may be able to see it live at http://www.skygrazer.com/dev/ but I make no guarentees since I may take it down in the future and I’m in the process of working on it.

Abstract – InSight

Monday, November 26th, 2007

insight This was one of the pieces I created as show entries recently. I had alot of fun with the idea and have a few other variations in mind that I may try at some point. I used some of the forming techniques I learned in Dan Cormier’s workshop for the outer rows of leaves. The innner leaves were baked on a decorative lightbulb.

insight side The center eye is acrylic and was glued in place after baking. I think I may turn this into a wall piece since it looks best when you look into it and I don’t have any low tables that I want to display it on.

Rejection

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

I’m feeling a little deflated.

I checked the list of accepted work for the show and neither of my pieces was listed. I’m disappointed because I really thought they’d make it in.

It’s hard to know whether there’s anything to learn from this. The show is only juried by one person so it could be that she just didn’t care for my style… Who knows? I could start second guessing whether they were good enough or whether she saw some fundamental flaw that I missed but I don’t think I will.

After all, I still really like both pieces so I guess I just swallow the sinking feeling of “they didn’t like my stuff!” and move on. And in a couple weeks when I can look at them more objectively, I’ll evaluate them to see if there’s anything I could have improved.

But it is interesting… whenever I’m very doubtful of getting into something, I do. When I get a little more confident, my ego takes a hit. There’s got to be something similar to Murphy’s Law that covers that. ;)

Abstract

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Well, I actually got some time to spend in the studio in the past couple weeks and I created two sculptures for my local art association’s Abstract/Avant Garde juried show. Now I just have to wait for the weekend to see if I got in.

Either way, I really like both pieces. I’ll have to post some pictures but they’re both abstractions on plant themes. Quite different from what I’ve done before but I may have to make a series of them to explore some of the other ideas I had. That’s what I like about shows and contests – it tends to make me explore new ideas and really stretch myself.

Bead Bazaar Recap

Monday, September 24th, 2007

Last weekend was the Bead Bazaar for our polymer clay guild and it seemed to go really well. The guild always takes two tables and we had beads from about 15 different members. There was a large variety of styles and some really gorgeous beads.

I was working on Saturday morning – it was quite rainy but that actually seemed to work in our favor. No one was doing outside activities and it was a perfect day for shopping. I also had my largest single sale so far – they bought six dragon’s eyes and a couple other pieces of mine.

Of course, then I got to go shopping myself :) I bought strands of stone beads and pearls, and some great dichroic cabs that I want to sculpt something around.

polymer clay fox bead I’ve got a couple things up on JustBeads this week if you’d like to take a look. There’s a treefrog, a faux ivory manatee, and this fox silhouette bead.
